Matthew – October 7

I have very good news to report. At 4:30 this morning, Harry’s heart finally (after ten long days), self corrected back to sinus rhythm. We will wait until Monday to cancel the conversion appointment, just in case, but there is much joy in these parts today.

My mother might have suggested that Matthew put Harry back into sinus rhythm, this being the day Matthew would have been 58. I don’t think so, but I do always remember my littlest brother’s birthday. I, the oldest, was 9 when he was born. How my mother managed to have 7 children in that short a time has always astonished me, though it seemed perfectly normal to us as children.

Today, we had lunch with Peter and lifted many glasses to the memory of our little brother. Matthew’s last birthday was in 1990. He died just after turning 26, but he left us all with indelible memories. I often delayed French class with stories of “mon pauvre petit frêre, Matthieu”, relating, en Francais, Matthew’s unlucky adventures. In the end, he was very unlucky, but continues to be much loved.

Meanwhile, yesterday, though Harry was having a rough day, Laura stopped by for a visit, which cheered Harry up. Jane and I were riding when Laura called to say she was nearby, and we galloped home to enjoy a laughter filled visit. Laura brought us passion fruit pods with seeds to plant, which will be exciting for next year.

While I’m posting pictures of pals, I forgot to post Harlan’s picture on Tuesday, when he was here to empty the dumpster and to share stories, always fun.

It was hot yesterday, which brings out the flies. It was dusty, and the horses had to wear fly masks. Winter coats are coming in, and it was not one of their favorite days.

I took a few pictures of the autumn color that seems to be coming on quickly. I think the leaves will drop rapidly, with the very dry few weeks we have had. The birds are more interested in water than in seeds in this weather. Immediately after these pictures, I topped up the bird bath water.

Harry got a picture of me on my bicycle. I bike over to Marilyn’s to feed Trigger and I bike to get the mail. I love riding my bike! I have become much more aware of the beauty of sky, thanks to a blog that I like to read, called Cats In Cambridge. Carolyn has raised my awareness of sky pictures.

Despite his irregular heartbeat, yesterday Harry had to make a video in the studio for an unveiling he will not be able to attend. I was the videographer. Here is a still picture of that endeavor. He was brilliant, as usual.

At close of day, Stone was very picturesque through changing leaves, and a pair of deer made a visit to the pasture.

On we go, grateful for these good days, and hoping for better days for all…

Be safe, be well, stay in rhythm! Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. I join in the cheers for Harry! It’s always so good to get that kind of happy news. I will keep positive thoughts for continued good health.
I wish you could share that video you took. Any way?
I didn’t know about your dear younger brother, Mathew; I was touched by your comments and photos. Such a handsome young man. That photo of him is captivating; I”d like to learn more about him. We hold onto the memories.

  2. I keep in touch with all my beloved beings that have passed from this earth to their next destiny. William Blake, and years later, Yeats were not the only poets to claim that death was like walking from one room to another, or discarding an old coat for that matter. For those of us that believe in the Vendantic philosophy of a unified existence, I have to admit it is great solace. The photo of you and Matthew is adorable!!! Precious!
Harry, you never cease to marvel me, I guess you are just too darn happy, and filled with love, to exit any time soon! Continued happy days to you all! While we all pray for those suffering in our tumultuous world.

  3. So pleased for Harry! What an amazing artist he is. I am glad you like my sky pictures. I do get a bit carried away!

  4. Anne,
I believe that picture of Matthew was taken in the snow tunnel outside of our dorm room at Old Faithful in Yellowstone NP the winter he came to visit Jamie. If I remember correctly it was before our very wet road trip to Texas and then to St. Louis.

  5. Good to hear Harry has had a change of heart, as it were! We also gaze at the sky, sometimes hourly. Marvel at the contrails, for they mean people are going somewhere, doing something interesting.
