Holding Pattern – October 5

After a busy horse show weekend, the week got off to a frustrating start. Harry’s heart has been misbehaving, and the doctor told us to call if sinus rhythm had not returned by Monday. Needless to say, we were on the phone as soon as the office opened. No human being was available, and after an interminable day of frustration, the cardiologist eventually called at 8:45 PM. Really, people who know us usually don’t call after 8 PM. It turns out that the cardioversion cannot be scheduled until next week. Hospitals are short staffed. This is frustrating, but sad news puts our small complaints into perspective. Cousin Ruth’s husband, Freddy (only 69), died while being evacuated from a hospital in Fort Myers, where they live. We are devastated for all the family by that news, and the continuing, shocking video footage from Florida.

Mornings begin with a bike ride to Marilyn’s house to feed Trigger. Marilyn is healing, and Roy is good company.

Turkey vultures are regular visitors lately. I do not like the stench of their meals, but I appreciate the work they do, and find them beautiful.

There is much to be thankful for, even when we are anxious about a week of waiting. The weather is glorious, if perhaps too dry, and there are unexpected, beautiful creatures all around us.

Jane and Derry are back in work, and jumping again.

Harry is taking life easy, hoping his heart will return to sinus rhythm, and enjoying his dogs and cats. He got a little bit of unexpected press recently in an intro to a news piece about Albert Pujols … https://www.ksdk.com/article/sports/mlb/stl-cardinals/albert-pujols-st-louis-cardinals-2011-left-2022-return/63-ce869d22-748a-4b3d-a010-46fa3e1358df

And so it goes around here – sorrows and joys, frustrations and consolations, all a fascinating patchwork as we careen along…

Be safe, be well, be grateful for every day. Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. Sending much love to you both. Bon courage for the long week wait.
The flower with the lovely butterfly ( not a monarch) looks like a zinnia to me. Fritillaria bloom in Spring in our parts (planting zone 5).
    Be strong !

    1. Yes, Catherine, that flower is a zinnia – the butterfly is a Fritillary – a Great Spangled Fritillary, I believe. I looked up Fritillaria flowers. I am not familiar with them, but they look very interesting. My book describes them as “true collector’s plants”. I will keep an eye out for them at the Botanical Garden next Spring! Certainly, there are none around here.

  2. I’m sorry to hear that Harry continues to have problems with his heart. I hope they are resolved soon. Marilyn’s log/sign is Awesome! I haven’t seen anything like that before. Someone spent a lot of time carving that masterpiece.

  3. My very best to you both. Why were all people gone in the hospital this last week, I wonder? Anyway, good vibes to you. And great pix of Jane jumping! Perfecto form, Jane.

    1. Hospitals are short of staff, Florence, it’s not an over abundance of patients, apparently. It’s a worrisome problem in our healthcare system.
Oops! I misunderstood your comment. Why the staff is missing I do not know, but I suspect Covid burnout may have played a part.

  4. As a kid I always thought the “blue tailed skink” was a species until about 10 years when I discovered it is the juvenile form of the 5 line skink, the bigger adult brown looking lizard that bites really hard. Loved all the nature pictures, including Harry’s.

  5. So sad about your cousin’s husband. This was a particularly vicious storm, it seems.
Praying for Harry’s health and the coming week of anxiety.

  6. So sorry to hear your bad news. It’s a sad situation that hospitals are short staffed. I don’t know how they continue to function with all they are up against. Love your kitties.

  7. This just after reading the news, one op-ed was about the lack of health care workers, and hospital/healthcare burnout. So much going awry, all over the world it seems. Yeat’s gyre is off kilter. Great shot of Weedy, such a handsome boy. And, Nettie looks fabulous. Harry does too!
Roscoe looks so much happier after Etta James and I left! Frog photo fabulous, I love you sharing your back yard!! Thank you!!
