Some Rain – June 18

It’s been a very busy week, and I have fallen badly behind in blogging. Today, we were expecting visitors, but that plan changed, producing a quiet day, with some down time. Even more desired than peace, rain has fallen. Not enough, but even this little bit is most welcome.

The big project this week was replacing the culvert on the north side of the north pasture. Our land here slopes to the west, and there has been a lot of erosion over the years. Initially, we expected that Nathan could fix the culvert / washout issue, but we discovered it was a bigger problem than we realized. Luckily, our neighbor, Al, is experienced, so we brought him in as a consultant. I won’t go into all the details, but the situation is even worse on the west side of the south pasture. There is a creek just inside the woods. This week, we got the north pasture done enough that we will be able to use it again for turnout. Next, we will probably be tearing out a lot of fence to address the bigger problem. It’s not all birdwatching and riding horses around here!

There is more to do, and finished pictures will appear eventually, but the pasture is in use this evening. The horses are delighted to be on fresh grass.

Weedy is recovering well. In the meantime, we are getting strong, lifting him to and from the couch and our bed. At all other times, he is confined to his pen and comfy bed, the Pasha Palace. He has been an excellent patient.

Jane has been riding Derry, but around here, life has been too hectic for us to ride.

I ran out of the barn to get a picture of Jane riding past

Bart was a very bad boy on Tuesday, when Harlan was here. His waterer needed fixing, so I put him on the wash rack, while I worked. He pawed and fidgeted, and ripped the rubber pavers right off the floor, not to mention terrorizing Harlan. I didn’t think to get a picture of the destruction, but the wash rack is now better than ever. And the waterers are all working.

The birds have begun to bring babies to the back porch. Life is resilient, even with the drought. There is great use of the birdbaths and the stream.

Marilyn rode through on Trigger with Roy, who availed himself of the water trough to clean up!

Well, this will need to be continued… Rest is important, and it’s late.

Be safe, be well, stay rested! Slava Ukraini! Peace.

Happy to hear Weedy is healing well! It’s very cool you have crows supervising summer work projects. I have cats on the window sills watching me pull weeds.

  2. I LOVE Weedy’s Pasha palace!!! Emmy is having trouble getting up on my bed. I need to put some thought into how close and bonding and comforting your construction is. And the big question: Are all species ableto clear out for a potty run with no delays?

  3. Is there anything more dejected-looking than a bird in molt? I love to watch the fledglings getting fed.
