The heat broke on Monday (yesterday) and Harry had a day off from rehearsals, so we spent some time together doing glamorous things like taking the recycling to the Recycle Works location. Weedy was thrilled to “go to town” and it was a fun day. Marianne switched her day off so that I could spend more time with Harry.
The summer tanager provided some pictures.
The hummingbirds, too.
It was so cool, we were able to turn the horses out early. Harry provided a silly picture with his horse, after giving him a well deserved treat.
And then the forecast rains arrived in the night. Poor Weedy didn’t sleep a wink, and Jane said Clover nearly had a heart attack. There was thunder and lightning and the rain poured all night long, so riding was definitely not an option this morning. Jane notified us that Interstate 70 was closed! The heavy rains we thought we had were nothing compared to St. Louis, which saw the most rain ever recorded in a 24 hour period. Suddenly, 3 inches of rain here seemed insignificant.
Both Harry and I had to go into town – Harry to downtown St. Louis for rehearsals, and I had to go to St. Peters, which suffered terrible flooding. Thanks to the GPS, which showed me a new route avoiding I-70, I got to the car dealership without incident, but the stories around there were dire. Flash flooding may be short in duration, but the devastation is lasting. Too much concrete, too many roads and houses, and not enough land for the water to disperse. It’s a mess. We are feeling very fortunate here, and to our south, not far, just across the Missouri River, they had only two tenths of an inch of rain!
Early turnout again, with the rains having ended.
Be safe, be well, stay high and dry. Slava Ukraini! Peace.
Our rain gauge showed five inches and was full to the top. A tomato plant blew over but was righted and suffered no damage. I really do like storms though. The awesome power of nature is amazing.
Sorry to hear about the flooding. It’s amazing the difference a few miles make.Very glad you avoided the worst.
Love the photos! Two orange cats so adorable, and the photos of Harry are wonderful! I was happy to get some rain here, my horse needed a good shower! Thanks Anne, this is a delight!
I can’t believe you got a Catbird to come to your feeder ! Miraculous !
