August Already

Well, it seems I cannot keep up with a daily blog, and will be lucky to manage a weekly installment. Climate change is happening faster than our internet these days. When I left off, the rains ushered in pleasant weather. But then came more rain, worse than the first, with ground already saturated and creeks running full. The only effect here was that Harry had a 3 hour commute home from rehearsals, when the interstate was closed for flooding. He was at a standstill for ages before the highway patrol managed to turn all the traffic around to get them off the road, but had he left a very little bit sooner, he would have been in the flood, so we feel pretty fortunate. Not so, a young friend, whose house flooded, and she and her husband lost both of their cars to water damage. Totalled. In a part of St. Louis that has never had a flood like this! At least they and their child and dog stayed safe, with family to take them in while things are sorted out.

Jane and I have been riding together again. Derry is coming along well in her rehab, thanks to Jane’s steadfast dedication regardless of weather. Bart is unfortunately looking a bit fat since his hot weather vacation, his rider being less assiduous.

Grass and flowers were growing, and grateful for the hiatus from heat. Now, the heat has returned, but we are all better off from the interval of pleasant days and cool nights and plenty of moisture.

The birds (and squirrels) are thriving.

During a break in the rain, the hay barn was replenished, which is always a comfort.

Weedy doesn’t enjoy his adventures as much, without Harry to come home to. We all miss Harry, but the show must go on – he is a dedicated thespian. So far, Covid testing has gone well. After the first two tests, home testing is allowed, which is teaching us to be proficient at that! We still worry every time, with more and more people getting the virus. Vaccinated and boostered, it hasn’t been deadly, but if anyone in the cast of The Rose Tattoo tests positive, it will derail the production.

Jane and I went to a celebration of life on Sunday for our friend, Kitty Mollman. It was a beautiful day for a garden party, sadly missing Kitty, who would have made it even better. But she seems there, still, in Melanie, her daughter, who is so like her. It was a bittersweet afternoon. As I returned Jane to her house, we were lucky to meet Marilyn riding through on Trigger with Roy, who missed the picture.

Yesterday morning, we had a bird strike, and it seemed pretty bad. For forty five minutes we stood guard over the stunned blue jay, worrying that his wing might be injured, and watching out for cats. We had a recovery box on hand, but opted for as much tincture of time as possible. When we finally decided we had to find out about the wing, we opened the door, and the bird lifted off and flew away. What a relief!

Squirrel Nutkin managed to reach the new finch feeder yesterday, that bad boy! Nutkin Minor is still dreaming of accomplishing such a feat.

Happy horses enjoying refreshed pastures…

Bart is resting up, ready to get back into serious work, with shows in the future.

Be safe, be well. Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. Anne, ,that is such sad news about your friends. This flood has been so devastating for so many. Harry’s timing was fortunate.
And don’t fret about the frequency of your blogs. No matter when they are sent, they are always enjoyed; your commentary and your wonderful photos are such a treat!
I love the photo of Bart asleep; as a city gal, I”ve never had the opportunity to see a horse asleep lying down.

  2. Those floods, unbelievable! So sorry for your friends. The squirrel antics are marvelous. And, poor, poor Weedy. such a miserable looking boy.
I too love the picture of Bart sleeping, so soundly, his mouth is even drooping. Trigger got a great portraint in the photo with Jane, Wow!
It lookslike August 18th is the opening of the The Rose Tattoo. Break a leg Harry! No, not again!

  3. Whoops! need an editor!! Portrait, please! Space needed elsewhere, oh for the love of a pen, script, and lovely paper!

  4. A delight to tour your world, your birds are fantastic today, thanks! So sorry to hear about Kitty. We had lots of fun at Carousel Farm a few years ago.
    Slava Ukraini! Peace
