Welcome Climate Change – February 21

We feel a bit guilty, enjoying the unseasonably warm February weather, but perhaps it is just a part of gratitude. At any rate, Spring is beginning to arrive early, and we celebrate her appearance (I chose to use that pronoun).

Today was Dumpster Day, luckily not postponed due to Presidents’ Day. Harlan was full of fun, as always, and did an exemplary job. In addition, he indulges my photography.

Harry is well recovered from his ablation, and is feeling better than he has in a long time. I think he looks better, if such a thing is possible. His doctor agrees with me! Weedy hates the camera…

Yesterday, Kevin delivered a good supply of hay, always a comfort, as we tend to go through a lot of hay this time of year, before the grass comes on. I neglected to get a picture of Kevin, but here is the beautiful hay.

The horses are spending more time in the pasture nibbling on the emerging grass, but also napping in the sunshine.

Jane and I are back to jumping, though admittedly on a very minimal level. First, crossrails, and today an elementary gymnastic. This afternoon, I worked the ring in advance of predicted rains. There is great upheaval in the local barns, leading me to be very grateful for my own barn, despite the work. Normally, I would be bitching about setting jumps and working the ring, but now I am just glad to have the weather and the wherewithal to play this game without drama or interference.

Today, I saw a red winged blackbird, but I didn’t have the camera nearby. Nonetheless, it is a true harbinger of Spring. All of the birds are a joy, of course, even the “common” ones.

Our common dogs and cats bring us constant joy.

Be safe, be well. We are living in troubling times. Be kind. Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. Though spring seems close, I think it is unsettling that we have such great weather so early. March can be a harsh mistress for sure. Hang on to your hats! And your winter jackets.

    1. I agree- March is also a bit of the ‘Mad Hatter’- I hope it isn’t as rough as some have been, but it’s easy to be tricked now. Don’t be too complacent!!

  2. I just love those first buds and blooms. I hope you get through to Spring without too much more “weather”!

  3. Hope to see you tomorrow. Big national Storm looks like it will go north of us. Hope so! Spring flowers are so lovely and welcome.

  4. Sooooo Happy to hear about Harry’s increasingly excellent health!! I too saw a red-winged blackbird in Forest Park the other day, yippee Spring is springing. I love the blue behind the common goldfinch, gorgeous blue reminding me of Susan Rothenberg’s blue, so hard to replicate. Thanks Anne for this, this respite from the racous of our world.

  5. I heard a little about the musical barns going on in your area, but I don’t know who Dino, the new owner of Great Griffin is. Meawhile Bettina may be moving her two horses to Morrisons but thee is a request from another unknown for 10 open stalls at Morrisons in which case Bettina would stay here. I HAVE gotten Dennis ready to drag the pasture here whenever the place cllears.
Send news if you get more.

  6. I don’t like social media. The only screens I scroll are the NY Times (out of habit) my email (reluctantly) and your blog (joyfully).
