Summer came back today. The morning was pleasant, though, and Jane and I had a nice ride, mostly wandering around on the trails, solving all the world’s problems in theory, followed by some actual work on the ring, including some jumping for Bart. While it was difficult to get motivated, it was great fun once we were aboard our steeds.

End of a morning ride, social distancing rules relaxed

Today I saw my first Monarch butterfly of the year! Very exciting indeed. We allow milkweed to grow in the fence line to help the monarchs. Last year the population seemed sadly diminished. I am hoping this was only the first of many to appear…

I ventured out to run many errands today, which isn’t very interesting. I did see a little baby raccoon on the side of a country road, near a cornfield. I hope his family was nearby. They are dreadful varmints, but this one was so adorable, it was all I could do drive by and not stop to try to cuddle him. Of course, that would have ended worse than Jack’s encounter with Mistletoe!

Speaking of varmints, the barn was varmintized (if that is not a real word, it should be) last night. Usually, varmintization happens because I have a senior moment and forget to close up the tack room. They get in and eat everything in sight. Luckily, I have been on the ball this year for the most part.

Anyway, yesterday I received some free samples of botanical insect repellent with some purchases from The Tack Trunk. I planned to try them today and left them on the shelf in the aisle of the barn, on which sits the Betsey Johnson Tick Jar. This morning, the varmints had chewed up the botanical insect repellant containers, and, to my great dismay, they actually bit a hole in the tick jar!!!! They are pushing me to start trapping and relocating. My dream of living in harmony is turning into a nightmare.

Harry worked in the studio, of course, but I failed to take pictures today. I will do so tomorrow to show the progress. Here is Harry this afternoon walking well. Hard to imagine he spent weeks bedbound and non weight bearing. It’s good to have him back.

Here is a potted cat. Roscoe resting in the shade…

The horses waited until just before sundown to go out. There are already a few horseflies about, but the season has not yet really arrived. It’s still possible to get happy grazing pictures.

Finally, from Montana, Rainy sends a special headshot for all her fans.

Stay safe, stay well.

  1. Those mule ears! Nearly out growing her head! And her sweet adorable eye, Rainy ❤️. Let me think, isn’t there a famous dish in China, Potted Cat? Great shot of the Monarch, makes me hopeful to see my first one, or have I? Don’t think so. Etta James and I are more on the watch for chipmunks. You lucky gals!!! You and jane, all these years, the moves, best friends forever for sure, LOVELY! Come to KY!!!
