Not Set Yet – February 27, 2020

I never tire of seeing Harry and Weedy sound asleep. This morning, we had a busy time getting ready for Pastor Keith to pick us up for a trip to Dr. Spizfaden for an x ray. But for a while, I let them rest.

Pastor Keith was right on time (arriving 15 minutes early) and he loaded Harry up and gave us a good trip in to town. We are so lucky to have found Harris Transport – what a difference they have made to our complicated travel! Harry wore his new Marlow Exuma hat for this special occasion.

We filled out paperwork and sat in the waiting room for a while, nothing like as frustrating as last week. Soon, we were in a room, the x ray was taken, and Dr. Spitzfaden arrived to show it to us. While we waited I took a picture of Harry, and he insisted on taking one of me…

Now, I must digress to confess our misunderstanding. Again, we thought this x ray would show signs of healing (we had originally thought that about the Surrey Place x ray, too, but that was only a week after the accident). The first follow up x ray was to check position of the bone. Now we are at almost three weeks, so we thought we would see fibers of healing bone on the x ray. Nope. Again, this was to check position. Dr. Spitzfaden was pleased, but we were stunned to see the x ray…

It seemed to us worse than the initial x ray, but Andy was happy, and sent us on our way with some instructions and a follow up x ray in three more weeks. The trip home was not a happy one. I guess we underestimated the time it takes to heal a femur at age 77. I had been warned by Brett, so was better prepared than Harry. I sent Brett this picture, and then, after we got home he called to reassure me that this is not a bad picture – that the initial phase of bone healing often looks worse, because the inflammation stage involves the body “cleaning up” the injury as it starts to heal. Our friend, Chip, said it’s like scraping off the old paint before you paint a house. That’s one way of looking at it. Anyway, our discouragement was considerable, yet what can we do, but plod on through the woods, eh?

And then, flowers arrived from Harry’s Philly Family – the cast of The Philadelphia Story, that Harry was so excited to be cast in, but has had to drop out. Perfect timing, beautiful and cheery. Harry’s acting talent brought forth a smile in the midst of a bad afternoon…

We are coming to grips with the extended timeline, and staying focused on one day at a time. And we are so lucky compared to most, we should not get discouraged. To our great sadness, word has reached us that a very dear riding friend (Laureen McKenzie) suffered an aortic dissection while sitting on a horse at a horse show yesterday in Texas. She has had surgery, but is still in ICU. All prayers should be sent in her direction.

Harry, thanks in no small part to Weedy, will be better soon…

  1. Beautiful pictures! The flowers! Your smiles! And well, the xray does look scary but what do I know? Oh dear Laureen! Healing energies to all.

  2. It seems Weedy has figured how to make lemonade out of lemons❤️ I love these pictures of Harry and Weedy. How can Weedy not help but to speed up this seemingly intractable bone. I like the house paint analogy. Anne and Harry you two look awfully good; keep up the good spirits!

  3. Nothing aortic sounds good, but what’s an aortic dissection and what brings it on.
Ran into Rich Gentry at Wally World. He said , Hey you used to know me when I was younger and better looking. And then we gossiped for a bit. His family is in Gulfport. Karen is jumping. “I’m 80, and I think I’m going to get started again,” Rich announced. He studied me to see how I looked. I cheered him on, told him I was horseless and didn’t know if I’d start again. He said he had Lost Valley Lake for sale and when it sold he’d really get going on the riding again. Running into him, busy and content, was a happy thing. Onward!

    1. Aortic dissection is a tearing of the inner layer of the aorta. Various causes, one of which is high blood pressure. A very severe problem!
The Gentrys are always fun, and ever youthful!
