Jane and I went to the final day of the St. Louis Charity Horse Show this morning to watch the Maclay Regionals Equitation. This class is the reason that the St. Louis show attracts top trainers to this area once a year. It is a treat to see the BNTs (Big Name Trainers) in person, and it is always very interesting to watch the testing competition.
This year, the judges were John French and Diane Carney. We have been fortunate enough over the years to know both of these respected horsemen. They have two very different styles, but are both at the top of the game. We actually trained with Diane for several years. Admittedly, I cried at almost every show, but I learned a lot about riding, and life. Harry and I did more than we would have thought possible with Diane teaching us.
There were 51 equitation riders, with 6 returning for the final test. Those six jumped a complicated track without stirrups at 3’6″ and it was an inspiration to watch.
I took pictures at the show today of some of the BNTs, but they were all too serious. Here is Peter Pletcher, the Texas trainer of this year’s Regional winner, Tessa Downey, at a table before the class began.
I spent the afternoon unpacking the trailer and contemplating how very fortunate I am to be living this life, doing what I have always wanted to do.
Stay safe, stay well. Peace.
