Back On The Horse

For the first time in 2024, Jane and I are back on a horse.

Yesterday, I rode Brett’s Crumlin while he rode his new horse, Junior. Lotta gave us a dressage lesson, and we finished up jumping some tiny little jumps for fun. Jane took pictures. The weather was beautiful, and it was a treat, finishing January on a high note. Best day of the year, so far.

Today, the first day of February, was more like May. Temperatures in the 60s F (16.6 C). I had hoped to maybe ride here with Jane, but the day did not go well. At 3:33 AM Harry went into A-fib, so we had to go into St. Louis to the electrophysiologist mid morning. Luckily, the scheduled plumbers did not need my help. They put new faucets into our bathroom, and new parts into the wash rack faucets in the barn. Jane DID ride Derry, and I got pictures of them as they returned home from the ring. I think Jane was happy to be back in the saddle!

All the animals here are well, but I wish Harry could have better luck. The stars just will not align! Here are a few pictures of the animals.

We had a fun trip to Chesterfield Mall on Tuesday, stopping at Fine Art Ltd. on the way to drop off some pieces. They have a wonderful bronze fox there (one of Harry’s).

Eddy is such a good dog, we just cannot believe our luck. He is not perfect, but he brings silliness and devotion into our life, which is a marvelous combination. We like to tell people he is a miniature Irish Wolfhound, but he is probably actually a lurcher. Whatever he is, we love him.

The horses are not sad to be on vacation, but I am hoping they won’t be mere pasture ornaments for much longer!

Be safe, be well. Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. Absolutely wonderful to see you, and Jane, onboard again! Jane’s smile tells it all, “This is my life with horses, this is what I love.” We understand. Lucky Derry, and lucky all the horses at Bronze Fox Farm. Funny, I was speaking to a friend in Southern Pines about you all just today, well, yesterday; it’s two in the morning right now. She told me she wasn’t sure her event campaigner was enjoying his retirement. He’s on their farm, attended to with love, but she’s afraid he’s missing his work. I’ll tell her about your boys, Bart, Oisin, and Stone enjoying their days off. I must come and meet your new boy, Eddy. Another lucky critter at your place. Weedy seems to have accepted him with the usual grace of the dog. Happy Days again! Harry, be well, you are loved!

  2. Oh Harry feel better soon friend!
Your joy and Jane’s at being back on a horse is one I fondly remember, thanks for sharing so many wonderful pictures.
So glad you found Eddy! It looks like he and Weedy have warmed up to each other a bit. Love wins yay!

  3. Eddy is obviously where he was meant to be and clearly he’s very happy. I would so love to have a dog but alas!

  4. I’m so glad you got to ride. I hope and pray Harry’s heart stays in rhythm. I’ve started riding again which is wonderful. Jane looked so happy to be back on Derry. Happy February. We have a new granddaughter and a grandson due anytime. Also we have a new grandog so life is good.
