Today would have been my youngest brother’s birthday. Matthew would have been 56, but he died thirty years ago. He left us too soon, but with many lasting memories.

Better than birthday cake, Cedar and Nettie celebrated with a cat food scatter. Too bad Nettie has figured out there must be a reason Cedar goes out in the mornings and returns with cat food on her breath.

I changed Stone’s bandage today, and he was a perfect patient. The Pearl Brothers were anxious to go out, so I put them in the pasture before attending to Stone. He stood quietly and never moved a muscle while I worked on him, then politely walked out to join his friends. He made up for being so good, though, by losing his right front shoe today, and coming in with one torn up hoof. Luckily, Fred will be here tomorrow to fix it. No horse is completely perfect.

Harry fixed a delicious breakfast with Rebecca’s gorgeous eggs. They are so beautiful, it’s hard to believe they are real – and they taste even better than they look. Mistletoe watched the proceedings, knowing this would be a good day to beg at table. Fruit and nuts be damned! The dogs vote for eggs every day.

I spent the day working around the barn, cleaning. Not a very exciting day, but productive in its way. We had a screen door being installed today on the new back door to the porch. Alas, we were last on the list for today, and John from Broadview arrived after 6 PM! He said he could work in the dark. But then, this being the door project from Hell, some “kit” was missing, so John will return on Friday or Saturday. Probably better this way.

The horses had another day of leisure. It was hot, almost 90 degrees (32.2 C)!

Harry spent most of the day in the studio, but he never neglects his exercises.

At the end of the day, we had time to relax and watch the vice presidential debate. Weedy wanted to know why we would do that! He loves the purple recliner, but he thinks politics are stressful. He feels our vibes and it worries him.

Finally, the deciduous holly hedge outside the barn is covered in berries. The birds will enjoy them this winter.

Stay safe, stay well, stay chill.

  1. God bless you and your Matthew. We lost my little brother Mike 34 years ago. He would be 54 today. It never goes away does it. Wow Oisin, that is some outfit! I realized during the debate that I will live to see the first woman president of the United States of America. Comfort and hope to be found in that for me.
    Peace

  2. Michael, who Linda mentioned so lovingly, is my nephew. So happy to see him mentioned along with your brother, also lost way too soon. Anne, your brother is adorable, handsome and with such a kind face. The picture of you two with the pony is priceless! It’s amazing to me how different your weather is in St Louis area, versus our perfect weather we’ve been having for weeks. Mild temperatures, sunny days, I’m just shaking my head it’s all so perfect. It did get up to 80 yesterday, late afternoon. Anyhoo, back to Weedy and his asute intelligence, love Weedy! No politics for us!!

  3. I love the picture of you and your Grandfather and younger brother. I’m so sorry about your brother. You look so adorable.
