Today my one of my little brothers turned 60. Yikes! Are we really that old!? Michael was born in Chicago, where we stopped on our way immigrating to St. Louis from Rosyth, Scotland. I can remember (though all memory is very suspect) spending some time in Oak Park at my grandfather’s house.

I now realize how impressive my mother was, moving in late pregnancy with four little children already, crossing the Atlantic on an ocean liner (the Maasdam) with all belongings, including a new Humber Super Snipe automobile. Thank goodness my father agreed to stop in Trudy’s hometown for the birth before taking Trudy and their now five children to a city where she knew nobody, to live out in what was then countryside, a complete shock for a city girl. She was not happy about it, but she made the best of it, and for we children, it was an idyllic place to live.

Anyway, happy pandemic birthday, Michael.

Before it was light, I spent some quality time with Roscoe to prepare for the day…

The horses were enjoying the cool morning so much that we postponed our early ride to give them a little more time in the field, knowing the heat is going to be here soon.

Morning sunlight, but still cool

Rosie greeted me as always, ready for breakfast and full of news about the night’s adventures. She is a very talkative cat.

Marmalade arrived for breakfast promptly, and this time I had my good camera. He hasn’t really come out yet, but I saw more than just his face. Progress! The early eastern light slanting into the woods looks like a fire behind him.

Jane and I had a good ride, once we got to it, with a bit of jumping.

The rest of the day was uneventful but full of beauty.

Harry worked in the studio, of course, and Weedy enjoyed his accustomed spot on the porch just outside.

And the day ends as it began, with happy horses enjoying their turnout.

Finally, out in Montana, Rainy is a growing baby mule, drinking from the tank now, but she thinks milk is better!

Stay safe, stay well, stay hydrated.
