Urine Trouble – January 8, 2022

Well, the day started with a trip to the vet (Marilyn) with three urine samples from Cedar. It was a terrible night. Cedar was denied water(for the urine test) and she was locked in the mud room, where she barked all night. I took her out at least four times. At one point, I lay down on her bed with her to see if that would keep her quiet. It did, but I got too uncomfortable, so went back to my own bed and tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to ignore the barking.

To our relief, Cedar is not diabetic, and her blood work was good, so her kidneys are not failing. But we don’t have an answer, so we don’t have a solution. Tonight she will be in the mud room again. She made another “mistake” – about a gallon’s worth of urine – on the rug this afternoon. This dog used to have the nickname “iron bladder” and was impeccably housetrained. So, we have a mystery disaster with no answer yet. I hope we will get some sleep tonight, which may help our perspective.

Meanwhile, Jane went to Marilyn shortly after we were there with her cat, Bobby. He has not been well – he, too, has polyuria / polydipsia. His blood work, alas, disclosed diabetes, so he will start on insulin, seriously complicating Jane’s life (but saving Bobby’s).

The local weather forecasters had predicted dire freezing rain, but that never happened, and the day warmed up dramatically before a late afternoon regular rain, and not too much of that. So, despite a disappointing start to the day, it could have been worse.

And speaking of things that could have been worse, Harry tripped coming up the mud room steps Thursday night, and fell hard. Miraculously, he did not break his arm, but he did cut it , and it is rather ghastly. Alas, I have been too assiduous in administering care, and keep forgetting to get a picture of the injury. He did allow me to blog about it, and I took a picture last night after changing the bandage.

In the tack room this morning there was feline friendship in evidence. In the house, Mistletoe and Weedy are best pals, sharing an adoration for Harry as well as a bed.

The birds were less friendly than the mammals today. A lot of bickering went on.

And speaking of squabbles, the horses got restless as the weather warmed, and some rough play took place.

Soon enough, they settled down and remembered their friendship. Would that we Americans could do that!

A chickadee has enjoyed the Christmas tree on the porch, which makes me very happy.

Roscoe and Arthur have had more contact, as Arthur is getting more confident upstairs. They have not discovered any friendship yet.

At the end of the day, Arthur joined Roscoe and me on the couch.

Stay safe, stay well, sleep soundly. Peace.

  1. Oh dear Cedar be well soon. Your bird pictorial is particularly entertaining today and I love how you love your gray cats. Thanks for sharing.
    Peace

  2. When my mother cut her foot rather badly, the nurse came and tried to bandage her ankle. She asked me to hold the foot while she worked on getting a bandage on properly. She gave up, so I took over and 1-2-3 had that foot wrapped like a horse wrapping pro. Horse women rule!

  3. I do hope the pee incontinence resolves for you soon! My old baby struggles with that too but in my bed! Papers towels to the partial rescue…
The bickering birds are amazing- I will have to ask you what size lens you’ve got there-

And I think Americans will get better when and if the Republicans get some real sense of humanity- and try to detox from the addiction to demagogues (I’m still steamed at some media too) Peace is nice but holy jeez

  4. I love my bird lessons, “note the strong woodpecker tail,” who knew? And, poor Cedar and poor you! It is my belief that dogs feel badly making messes. How did that recommendation work, Spray and Walk Away. was it? I feel for you, but we love our non-human family, no matter what. I once woke up in the middle of the night with a short trip to bathroom and trapesed through Chap’s runny defecation all over my bedroom floor. Now, that was the worst. I felt so badly for him. it looks like you used masking tape on Harry’s arm. However applied neatly. You’ve been very busy these days with extra curricular activities! I say, “Ride!” I know, the weather has been a distsaster. But your blogs lighten the day!

  5. Oh my, between Cedar keeping you up at night and Harry’s fall. That is a great bandage job. The next time I have an opportunity I’m going to grill you on what you used in case I ever need to banded someone. I hope that Harry’s injury will not encumber him too much. And that Cedar resigns herself to the mud room. I have had two diabetic cats in my lifetime and once the insulin dosage was regulated, their life returned close to normal. Hope that goes with Bobby as well.
