Tuesday – May 19, 2020

The female tanager (Mrs. Tanager, if you please) returned this morning for considerably more than a brief view. She must have been jealous of her husband’s blog pictures. She posed for the camera, and even tried to get into the house repeatedly! She is not as beautifully colored as Mr. Tanager, but she more than makes up for her plain yellow color with bright personality.

Jane and I had a great ride with Derry and Bart, including a bit of jumping. Bart was very happy to have company after some solitary rides, which are not much fun.

It was another Northwestern, gray day, damp and cool, but nice weather for the horses, who enjoyed an early turnout with no bugs.

Marianne let me get a picture of her face, which is colorfully bruised. She smiles through the pain, of course.

Marianne continues to work incredibly hard, here demonstrating her skilled wheelbarrow dumping technique…

Twizzler watches, ever cautious, such an odd, elongated cat! He has lived here for eleven years, and is still constantly worried. Twiz is the only animal we have who has bitten me badly, and that was when I was trying to help him by medicating him. He convinced me to let him die instead. That was five years ago. We are both still waiting. He is convinced it could be at any moment, while I no longer fret about it at all.

And finally, here is Montana mule baby Day 4. Rainy is very obviously an athlete. Nancy is providing me plenty of Springtime entertainment.

Stay safe, stay well, stay entertained.

  1. Thank you for keeping me entertained! Love the Tanager family and all your pictures, thanks for sharing! Stone, Derry, and the Pearl Brothers are the horses in my life now. ❤️ Having a few water issues here. Rosie is now parked at the Frosty Freeze (still closed) because her parking spot is under water and although we are scheduled for a roof this year, if we had scheduled for last year, then our ceiling would not be falling into the office/studio space this year. Oh well. All art and electronics have been moving to safe havens the last couple of days. Stay safe and well and happy. Peace.

    1. Oh, no! I wondered about your water situation this morning after reading about the dam failures in Michigan. How awful to have to move everything! I keep wanting to minimize possessions to simplify, simplify, but it’s too daunting. I guess a roof falling in can inspire action. I don’t envy you.
Wish we were closer, so I could offer a place to stay during the renovations!

      1. Thanks Anne! The dam failures are downstate (Michiganders here in Northern MI refer to “downstaters” like the people in Jackson Hole refer to “flatlanders”) but we are seeing a record flooding of the usually-small river, Middle Branch of the Muskegon, that runs through our Veteran’s Park. Tink’s walking trail is under water! I have walled off the hole in the ceiling with plastic. Patiently awaiting the roof and crawlspace dudes. The apartment in the back of our building is OK.

  2. The birds, the horses, the cats, the weather, the dogs, Harry in the studio working assiduously, Jane and Derry, Marianne, how do you make it all so interesting, so artistic, and sooooo uplifting?
