Tuesday – December 1, 2020

I was able to get a better picture of the full Beaver Moon, as it finished its trip across the sky this morning.

Cedar accompanied me to the barn, as she does every morning, for her cat food scatter. Tom Morris met us on the path, having enjoyed a well lit, if cold, night out.

The horses were happy for hay.

I cleaned stalls and got everything ready for Marianne to bring the horses in later. Just as I was finishing up, Harlan arrived to empty the dumpster and I gave him some banana bread – to eat, not for the trash truck!

The cats made the most of the cold morning. Tom Morris claimed the bed in the tack room, Rosie took the sheepskin saddle pad on the trunks, Twizzler found a shaft of sun in the aisle, and Skittle soaked up rays on the south side of the barn. There was abundant sunshine, as the forecast had promised, so the day became pleasant in short order.

Then it was off to Chesterfield for a visit to Bluetail. Twelve weeks after the stem cell treatment, they recommend a follow up PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injection. This involves taking blood, spinning it down for platelets, and adding some fat derived stem cells for good measure, extracted from fat on the hip. I have no desire to be tough anymore, so I opted for a valium. Even so, it is not much fun, though it was good to see Dr. Crane, whose competence is impressive, and who is also a very nice guy. It took over an hour, and it hurt quite a lot, but that will pass in a day or two. The best part is that I am now enrolled in a study, part of an effort to get this treatment covered by insurance someday – because it works. No pictures, alas.

Home again, I am taking it easy and using pain meds. Nettie is growling at me because I wanted a picture with her. Roscoe is exhausted from caregiving. Also, I cut my own hair – the mullet look was too much for me.

Harry is my real caretaker this week. I am so lucky! Look how well he takes care of Weedy.

By the way, it turns out that the leak in the water feature is in the pond. This is rather bad news, because it’s quite a big pond. We will report our findings to Connie tomorrow and see what she suggests.

Finally, a lovely picture from Nancy in Montana, where it was also cold but beautiful today.

Stay safe, stay well, stay warm.

  1. Anne, so sorry about your body not conducting itself properly. Glad to hear your approach, and the treatment works. My question is when will that be? I hope soon! I’m just shaking my head. Poor you! Roscoe’s photo and caption is hilarious. As well as Weedy’s and Harry’s, and Nettie growling. Sending oodles of love and get well wishes.

    1. Full recovery from a torn meniscus (which I believe I did gardening!) will take 7 – 9 months. At 3 months after the stem cell treatment, they have found a follow up PRP improves long term outcome, so that’s why I did it. It was extremely painful for 12 hours, but is already better. No need to feel sorry for me. I feel very lucky that I was able to take advantage of this relatively new advance in treatment! We all send love to you and Etta, too.

  2. I hope your recovery goes smoothly. Thank goodness you have Harry and your pets. I bet Roscoe is big help with his purrs. Thank you for continuing your blog which gives such an insight of your life and your friend’s lives. If you need something, please don’t hesitate to ask. You are much braver than I. Much braver! I changed our perpetual calendar, just four months to the start of spring gardening!

    1. My recovery is well underway. I expect to be riding on Friday! 19 days until the shortest day of the year. As the days start to lengthen, hope begins to germinate. I so look forward to Spring gardening! By mid February we MIGHT see a crocus!

  3. Your smile is infectious – & through that pain! With all the dangerous stuff you do…you tore your meniscus gardening?? I had to back up to see you were talking about you and not a horse – surprised it’s not standard and covered by insurance for people!
