Thursday – August 5, 2021

Time to catch up on the month of August, which is already getting away from me. Monday, August 2 was my brother Peter’s birthday. 55 years ago, on his fourth birthday, a picture was taken of Peter riding the neighbors’ Peter Pony in our back yard. It is unusual to see a picture of Peter these days, as he avoids cameras. Strangely enough, though, he is the curator of rare family pictures, so in his honor, here are two rare ones.

Jane has resumed her Monday volunteer work at Therapeutic Horsemanship, so Susan and I rode without her. We couldn’t resist jumping the recently cleared log at the top of the hill.

Susan also rode Stone, which freed up some time for me to spend with Harry before he left for a day of meetings.

Rebecca came to help with the garden, which was fun. There was also a rock delivery from Darrell Hasenjaeger, and a visit from our insurance man, John Nordwald, with his assistant, Megan. A full day indeed. The visitors enjoyed seeing the studio, but were disappointed to miss seeing the sculptor.

One of the reasons I have missed blogs for the past few days is the frustrating slowness of the internet. Maybe there are many people streaming the Olympics.

On to Tuesday, as I slog through the interminable waits for things to load!

In the afternoon, Marilyn rode over on her horse, Trigger. He is a very nice young horse, and tolerates Roy’s exuberant company well.

Yesterday, we reset the entire ring. It was cool weather, so not as brutal as some of our resets, but still very hard work. It’s nice having a young person to help. The horses rested, while we worked.

In the evening, we were guests of our friend, Terry, for polo and dinner. We picked up Laura at her farm on the way in to St. Louis and had a perfect afternoon and evening together. Traveling up the Three Creek Farm drive causes waves of memories and nostalgia.

Today, we jumped.

Big day for Mistletoe. We went to the Ellisville groomer and she has her summer hairdo. While she was at the spa, we had a belated birthday lunch with Peter. It was a fun day.

The tanager was on the back deck being photogenic, squabbling with a red bellied woodpecker.

We were speaking recently about cultural appropriation, which I think is a silly controversy. I fear “wokeness” is going to get us into a lot of trouble. And since I earlier mentioned rare photos, here is a gem. Harry in a parade in St. Charles a few years ago (2016), a less politically sensitive time, portraying Clark with our friend, Eve, as Sacajawea. Are we to deny ourselves all silliness and fun?

And finally, Roscoe patrols his kingdom… He does not believe in political correctness.

Stay safe, stay well. Peace.

    1. Oh, Margaret! I didn’t think you were still doing polo! I would have loved to come and visit (I saw Amanda and Kelsey Bray on the field and would have liked to say hello to them, too). Alas, we were guests, and our host is very compromised physically, so there was no way to walk over. Good to hear from you, at least!
