There Will Be Flowers – February 15

On a very dreary day, with the U.S. government creating anxiety all over the world, and a promise of record cold temperatures ahead here, it is a good day to remember that there will be flowers. Here are a few pictures of blooms to brighten dark times. I can recall cocuses raising their intrepid colors as early as Valentine’s Day. Not this year yet, alas, but here are some flowers from not so very long ago. They will return!

In choosing some flowers to feature for cheering up a dreary day, I come upon pictures of people who cheer our life. Two are featured here. Pat left us in 2020, but she is with us every day in memory, and her summer gardens were as beautiful as her spirit. Steve is half a continent away, but is Harry’s first childhood friend, his friend still, and beloved by both of us.

Meanwhile, life here goes on, in a winter I think we will long remember as a miserable time. Jane came over for tea on a cold and snowy day to a warm fire.

I went to Jane’s house for a visit yesterday, and a cup of her tea, which is always much better than ours. I think it has to do with her wonderful pig mug.

Harry took pictures of Eddy and me attempting the pasta scene from Lady and The Tramp. People often stop me and say that Eddy looks just like the Tramp!

It was a seriously dreary day today, but above freezing. Harry and I repaired a broken board in the paddock, glad that we managed to get that done before the deep freeze.

Bart’s lump seems to be on the mend, though he does not appreciate the constant examination and squeezing

Stay warm, stay safe, stay sane in these unprecedented times. Look to the natural world for solace. There will be flowers. Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. Dear Anne,

Thank you for all the photos and the hope of better days.
I don’t know very much about birds, so I appreciate the identification you give. This time, with the flower photos, I tested my memory (or lack of) and came up a bit short, but flowers come, no matter what. Thank God for that, and thank you for all you wonderful posts, through these very difficult times. As a very worried Canadian, you manage to give me some solace.
Russell and I have escaped the Canadian winter, spending some time in France with family, and now in Southern Spain (near Málaga) till the end of February. Meanwhile, Montreal is thoroughly snowed in. No snow removal for us, Yeah!
Much love to you and Harry

Love the photo of the Lady and the tramp!

Thank you for the reminder that flowers will come. Much needed during these scary times!!! As always, love the pictures!

  3. Spring flowers are so special. Everything here is currently buried beneath layers of snow and ice as our bizarre winter continues. It’s always cheering to see pictures of your smiling friends and the many animals. Yes, Eddy is a Tramp look-alike! Nice to see Jane and her gang.

  4. What a treasure, many of the flowers foster fond memories, such as my mother who loved the Peonies, the Magnolia which aptley surrounded my house in Southern Pines, and the Fuchsia which reminds me of a long walk in Ireland. Exquisite photos, especially the Swallowtail on Native Astor, gorgeous! We can see his “straw” so long! Even the Starlings startle us covered with tiny stars. I loved the journey, thank you!
