Sunny Saturday – October 16, 2021

It was good to see sunshine this morning, and the horses were very happy to get outside, despite the chilly start. Their winter coats are quite evident already.

We met our friend, Brett, at the local (well, Lake St. Louis) Farmer’s Market, followed by lunch. Weedy came along, and it was a magical morning. Weedy loves everyone, human and dogs. Our hearts almost exploded when he befriended a profoundly disabled young man in a wheelchair, and returned to him when he saw him again later. I couldn’t take pictures, of course. But we did stop to listen to some music – a guy named Kenny Lee Hall. A song was played especially for Weedy. Here is a link to a video of that…

Brett treated us to a delicious lunch, outdoors, so Weedy was able to join us. It was wonderful to laugh and spend time together. Brett, of course, changed my life by letting me ride VDL Bravo for a few months, seven years ago. We love to ride together, still, but he has injured his leg in that dangerous sport of tennis, so he is sidelined for a while.

Once home, we watched the Maryland Inaugural 5 Star – Fair Hill – Eventing cross country. It was quite a daunting course, but, as always, the good ones made it look easy. Until the last horse, one of the best, Fernhill Singapore and Philip Dutton, put a foot wrong on landing after a simple jump, and took a terrible fall. Eventually, they both walked away, but there were some worrisome moments.

After that rush of adrenaline, it was time to get to work on some garden projects. The horses were enjoying the sunshine, and the wind was blowing a gale, so Jane and I decided not to ride. The ring was very wet, anyway. The wind will soon fix that.

When I went to the woods to dump stuff from the Mule, I discovered evidence that some fox or coyote had enjoyed a turkey dinner. The circle of life…

In the studio, Harry was hard at work.

I took a picture of the south studio wall, with one of Harry’s earliest sculptures, Foxhound At Work, beneath a picture of Harry at The Blessing of the Hounds, when he was hunting the Bridlespur pack. The clay of a young Jack Buck looks on.

Also on the south wall, a stone version of a young Jane Walters, almost looks like a sketch…

Outside, a purple chrysanthemum and a view of the stream from the south side caught the camera’s eye.

The horses were waiting at the gate when I finished my chores. I never get tired of those faces!

Stay safe, stay well. Peace.

  1. Oh My God. I LOVED the song about dogs. That was a real hoot. I heard about the video when I was at the tack trunk. It’s a small world.
