Spring Peepers!

Well, here it is, March 1st, and there are Spring Peepers singing in the woods. I admit I did hear one last Tuesday, when it was quite warm, but it was an outlier, and overly optimistic. This evening, there was a full chorus. Those little frogs are astonishing, freezing solid in winter, only to Spring back to life, giving us hope that winter will perish. Would that the same miracle could happen for Ukraine, and Russia could stumble and fall, but it’s not hopeful tonight. Still, we hope…

Meanwhile, it was gloriously warm. Being Tuesday, Trash Day, Harlan arrived as usual, and did his masterful job, emptying and placing the dumpster. He is always full of interesting tales of the past week, and I look forward to seeing him.

Harry and Weedy went off to town to run errands, while I did barn work and spread pasture seed. Tom Morris was full of the joys of Spring, as my grandmother used to say, climbing a tree just for the fun of it.

The sunshine and warm weather were pleasant for all, though I didn’t take many bird pictures today. Goldfinches were first to arrive. The flicker visited, too, but I left the camera in the barn, and missed that shot.

Jane and I rode our Irish horses, and even jumped! They are not completely unfit, living outside all day as they do, romping and coping with difficult conditions, so we did jump a few tiny jumps to see if we could remember how. The horses basically cantered over them, unimpressed. It was good fun, followed by baths, since we worked up a sweat.

Late this afternoon, Marilyn came by to give the horses their Spring vaccinations (and, at Jane’s house, dog vaccinations, too). Marilyn pulled their Coggins tests last week , and the results were emailed to us today, so we are ready for action.

While I was doing afternoon chores, the cats kept me company.

As I finally made my weary way to the house, Roscoe greeted me in the fading light.

Be safe, be strong, be well. Pray for Ukraine. Peace.
