Some Frustrations – July 7, 2021

Susan arrived bright and early and joined the old ladies for a morning school. It’s hot summer now. The horses were good, and Susan and Oisin jumped.

Harry took the morning off, having to go to VMD Sculpting (Vlad’s place in Soulard) to check on a patina. We had plans to meet up for lunch after I ran an errand into St. Louis county. Susan had time to ride Stone after our first ride, and I took some pictures with the good camera.

You can see in the background of the next picture that the hay in the back field has been cut. This is an event that I always dread because of the turtle carnage. Any box turtle that happens to be in the field will be killed. So, it was a delight to see a turtle outside the house this morning, just as I was leaving, safely crossing the driveway to the island in front of the house. I rushed in and got her some cantaloupe. She is the same turtle I saw in June. I think I will refer to her as Spot, for her distinctive shell damage.

Harry called to warn me that there was construction on Highway N, so I took the scenic route through Busch Wildlife Area into St. Louis. Then we met up for lunch back in St. Charles county, and had a delicious meal, with a charming waitress from Missoula, Montana, which is Nancy’s part of that enormous state.

I left, and went to the feed store, where I discovered I had left my purse at the restaurant. Thus began a frustrating afternoon. I picked up my cell phone to call the restaurant. It had been glitching and now it failed utterly, went dead. Luckily, Susan was working, so she let me use her phone to call (they had my purse safe and sound). Off I went for retrieval, contending with Highway N this time. From restaurant to AT&T store, from there to yet another AT&T store in Wentzville. The phone recovered, but is deemed unlikely to thrive, so I ordered a new phone, which unfortunately must be shipped to me. It is crazy how dependent we are on these phones. I am crippled without it, anxious that it may die on me at any moment, but keeping fingers crossed that it survives until replacement arrives.

But frustration was not over. I chose to go from Wentzville back to the feed store, and once on the bridge over I-70, I realized the interstate was closed because a Grace trash truck had crashed in the median. I am worried about Harlan, and hope he was not the driver! All the traffic was routed off the interstate onto the very road I was taking. It was a mess. As always, Jane came to the rescue and gave the horses an extra flake of hay, so I found them happy and healthy when at last I made it home.

Harry says I should write a book of Anne’s First World Problems. We are so fortunate, I should never complain. Actually, even in the annoyance of this afternoon, I recognized how very lucky I am. I returned to Harry and horses and dogs and cats with gratitude for all.

Stay safe, stay well. Peace.
