Show Shoes – September 4

No showing today, because the horses needed shoeing, and Fred was coming to give them fancy feet. He was fresh back from Chicago, where he shoes a big barn full of show horses. We feel very lucky that he takes care of our little group of irregulars.

As always, there was much laughter and fun to go with expert work. The horses were very ready for shoes, with the wet weather, plentiful grass, and seasons changing. It was expected to be a hectic morning. With the Labor Day holiday, dumpster emptying was scheduled a day late, so I texted Harlan to ask him to finish before 9 AM, when Fred arrives. At 5:45 AM, Harlan texted that he would be here at 6:15! That was a good start to the day. Then, when I got into the house on the way to open gates for Mehlers to do the erosion work, I discovered a text to tell me there was another day’s delay on that project, which took some pressure off. Jane and I were able to relax and enjoy Fred’s visit.

We had delicious leftovers for lunch, from Harry’s dinner last night at a steak house – which we shared with the dogs.

Jane and I made a quick trip up to the horse show to produce our old lady and horse paperwork, completing our entries and signing up for classes tomorrow. It’s pretty exciting to be headed back to the show ring! Bart and I are going to do a very low class to start our comeback.

Harry is as excited as I am about the horse show, but he has more confidence than I do! I feel very lucky to be doing this with his support.

Tonight, I went out into the pasture to give Bart a treat. It was pitch dark, and I had a headlamp, but decided it was easier to find the horses without the lamp. The stars were spectacular, there was enough light to see Stone, ghostly in the dark, then here came Oisin’s big white face, and close by the dark shadow of Bart. There were glow worms in the grass, and a couple of fireflies in the air. A magical night, promising adventure for tomorrow.

Be safe, be well. Notice magic, it’s around us. Slava Ukraini! Peace.
