Pi Day Saturday – March 14, 2020

Today is Dorothy’s birthday (also, Einstein and my father’s brother, Uncle Mike), so an auspicious day, nowadays “pi day”, as well. Auspicious it may be, but today it has been wet and miserable…

It’s wet out there!

Unfortunate weather for Laura (Dorothy’s sister), who was hosting the Gumbo Flats Gold Cup Field Day, an extravaganza day of basset hunting and competition, complete with brunch and dinner! Jane was scheduled to judge, and it was certainly unfortunate weather for that job! One of Laura’s bassets celebrated the big weekend by producing NINE puppies for the occasion.

Dorothy has recovered remarkably quickly from her lung surgery. She gave up a lobe of lung, and with it, all the cancer. No need for chemo, so I expect she was able to enjoy her birthday celebration, which happened in conjunction with the Gold Cup festivities. We were sorry to miss toasting her milestone birthday…

Meanwhile, here at the Bronze Fox rehab facility, Harry is doing really well. He is now able to get in and out of bed without help! This is a big step forward (so to speak). I know I take too many pictures of Harry asleep with his dog, but it entertains me, as I drink my first cup of coffee in the morning…

Before Harry got himself out of bed, a sound second sleep

The dogs are very happy that Harry is up at the table for meals. He disobeys the rules routinely, and passes out treats, which delights the dogs, and disgusts Roscoe.

The goldfinches are starting to go gold for Spring, despite the cold rain…

We also had another visitor who seems to be molting… This is a relative of my father’s arch enemy in the garden, Squirrel Nutkin…

So, for us it was a quiet day of self quarantine, and a chance for me to hone my cooking skills, which are legendarily bad. I disapprove of “food pictures” posted on the internet, but as a chronicle of our day, here we go…

Jane had hoped to be home in time to bring her horses in, but the miserable day got too late, so I was delighted to do something for Jane for a change! Derry, and Sandy the donkey, and especially Calvin, the pony were VERY ready to come in for dinner, and the dogs were released from the pen and taken to the house. Jane’s dogs are wonderful!

Bart, too was ready to come in from a day of no fun at all… I had to employ the electric fence to prevent rough housing, with the pastures under water and the horses locked in paddocks… What a bore!

And now for some really good news – I had a call this morning from Franklin County Animal Medical Center, and Mickey has been neutered and vaccinated and transported to his new rescue home! I was sure, with the coronavirus wreaking havoc on the world, that poor FIV cat would languish in a cage, or just be put to sleep, but instead, his life has changed for the better in a big way.

And so, before we have time to really register it, another day slips by, as we count our blessings in the company of good dogs…

    1. Yes, Rebecca, as the pandemic slouches toward us out there, good news abounds here. We never forget how very lucky we are (and so glad that Mickey got lucky, too…)

  1. Never will I get tired of Harry and Weedy in bed! Sweet. Now my favorite today, however, is Roscoe’s disgust, or is it horrified at your goings on in the kitchen, my sentiments exactly!

PS. So happy to get these posts, please do not stop sending from Bronze Fox Rehab!
