I am tired by this seesaw of a winter, and I think I sounded a bit complaining yesterday about the work of having horses at home. I wanted to emphasize that it is not all that easy, but I failed to point out the benefits, which, of course far outweigh the responsibilities. You can see some of the joy in my blog pictures.
It is a daily delight to look out at happy horses in a field. Getting up early and going to the barn as the birds are beginning their songs is always a treat. Being escorted by two orange cats and a loyal old dog adds to the morning exultation. The completion of barn chores brings great pleasure, and the mindlessness of the work affords opportunities to listen to books and podcasts. Bringing horses in for their evening feed is a perfect way to mark the end of the “workday”. Best of all, night check is magical in the dark, sparkling with stars, and there is nothing as comforting as the sound of horses quietly munching hay at night, as I turn out the lights.
Harry and I ventured out for errands with Weedy. The roads were pretty scary, but as the day warmed up, they improved and the drive home was not at all stressful. I am very sick of winter, though. These country gravel roads are going to take a while to melt.
Tom Morris and Skittle cuddled together. It was very cold last night.
I try to see beauty in the snow, but it’s getting harder.
There is definitely beauty, though, in our old dogs.
And there is magnificence in this big gray cat…
Be safe, be well. Peace.
Thank you, Anne , for reminding us of the joy in doing routine work and loving our animal partners.
I did not think you were complaining yesterday. I loved what you had to say about the daily routines of caring for large animals. When that was my way of life back a few years, I loved it – most of the time. Slogging through deep snow and clearing a path for the animals to even get into the barn, only to have the foot or so of snow slide off of the metal roof the next day and having to do this chore again was not an uplifting experience…. Barn chores gave me an excuse not to do the dreaded house chores or other things. And the joy and fulfillment of being with well loved animals that fill your life is beyond words. I miss that…. And I love your blog (smiley face)
Thanks so much for the kind words – and yes, I did forget to mention the snow sliding off the metal shed roof! Luckily, our barn has a shingle roof, which prevents the big dump. I think all horse people would agree that barn chores are infinitely preferable to house work! I am looking forward to Spring this year more than I ever have – might be age and exhaustion!
