Father’s Day yesterday was a chance for Jane and me to make a visit to Susan and Wiley’s new foal in Perry, Missouri, meeting Melissa and Lindsey there from Kirksville. It was a reunion of old friends to celebrate a new life. Harry was busy in the studio finishing a project, so he held down the fort at home.
It was a pleasant drive, on a glorious day, to the beautiful farm where Bart was born. Pearl, a gorgeous 7 year old, gave birth at 5 AM on Thursday morning to a huge and handsome, very well bred bay colt with two hind socks. It was fun to see our friends, and a real treat to see a new foal, loose limbed and learning about the world. Pearl is a first time mother, but a good one, if something of a “helicopter mom”. Never aggressive, she nonetheless tried to position herself between the colt and the visitors. I was entranced by it all.
The baby was friendly, and just learning about his body and how to romp.
Wiley had to go to work. With hay to put up, Father’s Day is not a holiday on a farm. Pearl got her fly mask removed so that we could see how beautiful she is, and she romped with the baby. It was a lovely, cool morning for learning to be a horse.
All that fun was exhausting.
Soon, it was time to untangle those long legs and get up from the ground.
With flies waking up, it was time to get out of the sun.
We left Pearl and the baby in peace, said hello to Teah and old Frosty, the barn mates, and set off for lunch. Alas, Father’s Day had filled the only restaurant in town, so we said goodbye and headed home.
As we neared home and drove down Raymond Drive, we saw another baby – wait, three babies!
At Jane’s house, Clover is an old lady, not a baby, but she is so tiny and cute, she qualifies.
At our house, in the heat of the afternoon, a group of baby birds (cowbirds, I think) enjoyed the birdbath.
Out in Montana, Nancy and Steve’s baby mule, Bucksnort, has grown into his legs. Gracie has produced another magnificent mule.
And finally, here’s Harry as a baby of six, riding a bucking stuffed pony…
Be safe, be well, stay young at heart always. Slava Ukraini! Peace to all, old and young.
Oh what fun love the pics!
Happy Solstice

Pretty baby!
Reading about new (and old) life as I greet the solstice. Perfect!
Wonderful pictures, Anne, as always, but that mare and foal are really exceptional. They really fill the frame! That blog made me happy.
.
Such very beautiful babies and what a gorgeous mama! Like the pic of Harry too!
Mares and foals, the best! Mom is gorgeous! Would love to know about the breeding~ And, that handsome mule!! Looks as though some Norwegian Fjord snuck in there. Harry’s photo is confusing to me, a stuffed buckin’ bronco, looks like an angry, wild, real thing to me! Yikes!!
A perfect day you‘ve had, thank you for sharing it all. Happy Horses, Happy Days!
Jane,
He is by Casallco (Casall), out of our homebred Pearl (Kismet HF) who is by Sandreo, out of a Quicksilber/Silvio mare we were fortunate to have on breeding lease for a couple of years – Susan
Thanks, Susan!
