No Irish Luck This Month

Today is St. Patrick’s Day, though we did not bother to wear green. The grass is striving to celebrate, though, and getting quite green. It was an uncommonly warm St. Patrick’s Day, and Spring has sprung, with flowers and frogs, turkeys gobbling in the woods. Soon the juncos, the little “snow birds” will depart.

Alas, Bart is sick, so we will not be going to Ohio next week. He coughed on Sunday, and I was worried. It persisted, and he produced some virulent looking gunk (the picture of which I will spare you), though there was no fever. His vet came yesterday and did some bloodwork, listened to his chest, and he has congestion in the left lung. So he is on antibiotics, and Jane and I, as well as our friend Lindsey, who was also planning to join us in Ohio with Kris, are very sad. We have perspective, of course. As troubles with horses go, this is an inconvenience, but not a catastrophe. None of the other horses are sick, but with all the EHV around, we are being cautious. Bart probably picked something up at the Flying Fox show, since the timing is right for that (one week later). An 8 hour trailer ride to an enclosed facility with hundreds of horses might be ill advised even for the horses that are not (yet) sick, so we have pulled the plug on that adventure. Onward…

The flicker was here this morning.

Marianne, too, came by this morning. She is always cheerful, which is nice. I had a short chat, took a picture, and then we had to visit the tax preparer. Not fun, but Harry and I did go out to lunch afterward.

Cedar enjoyed the warm weather, perfect for watching.

There is much beauty around the farm on a day like today.

Harry visited Stone, but wasn’t able to ride, as his heart is misbehaving. It is not altogether a bad thing that we had to cancel the trip to Ohio.

Jane and I did get to ride, and it was a delightful day for wandering around the trails. Even Oisin was well behaved in the early heat, still wearing his winter coat, which is shedding apace. Harry wasn’t available to take a picture, so I told Oisin to stay and keep his ears pricked. He is so obedient!

Harry worked on cleaning an antique sword this evening. We both have an early start tomorrow, going in different directions.

Be safe, be well, be healthy, be strong. Peace.

  1. Poor Bart! Poor you! Another obstacle to clear, and leave far behind. The picture of Oisin posing as directed brought a big smile and chuckle, how adoarable is that????? Isn’t it wonderful how they love you?

    1. Thanks, Carolyn! Bart is quite happy, but still coughing. Still no fever, and nobody else coughing, so we are thankful for that.

  2. I am so sorry for your Ohio competition but I so respect your decisions. Right now I have a strong desire to hug and treat Bart, Oisin, Stone and Derry. They will carry you both in your next adventure, and that will happen because you all realize the needs of your horses and they will reciprocate in their wonderful jumps with you both as time goes on. Hugs to all of you: humans, dogs, cats – and wildlife!
