Monday – April 20, 2020

Oh, the day got off to a bad start! Weedy went out after breakfast, as usual, with his tracker collar on. He was on the other side of the creek, over near the ring, when there was a terrible commotion. A real fight of some sort – we could hear it from the house. I put on shoes and was about to run out to see what was happening, when he returned, seeming quite chastened. He came into the house and sat down, leaving blood on the floor. He seems to have been bitten somewhere on his right rear leg. We couldn’t actually find the source of the blood without upsetting him, so we let him lick his wounds, and we left him alone. It’s very disturbing to see our cheerful boy feeling sad, but I expect he will bounce back.

Ouch!

With Weedy safe at home, we took the truck to Wentzville for repair of the door handle. The protocol for dropping the truck off was intense, and they were spraying the vehicles with disinfectant after the drivers left. We had to sign a document stating that we had not been sick in the past month, or been in contact with anyone sick! It did give one a sense of some security, that they were being so careful. While it’s there, I told them to do an oil change and service. The bad news is that they called midday to let me know the front brakes needed replacing – pads and rotors. Ha! And I thought the door repair was expensive! Still, cheaper than a new truck…

Another milestone – Harry drove for the first time since his accident! He followed me to Wentzville in the car.

Harry takes the wheel!

While in Wentzville, we made a grocery run. It was during the special time for older customers (alas, we qualify) and the store was not at all busy. It was relatively stress free, for a change. Hoff Heating and Cooling came by the house and gave the furnaces their Spring checkup while we were in Wentzville, so that was an efficient use of the morning (we left the dogs locked in the bedroom).

After lunch, Jane and I rode. We did lots of transitions today. The horses were very good, which was lucky for me, since I forgot to wear a helmet! Harry took a picture of that transgression when he saw me from the studio. He was going to send it to Kris to get me in trouble, but I beat him to it. And Kris was suitably horrified.

Oops! Don’t do this at home, kids!

There was time for a few pictures, of course. Another beautiful morning.

Harry took Weedy out for a short walk this evening.

Nettie brought Weedy a deer leg, but we wouldn’t let her bring it in the house…

As the sun was going down, the light was beautiful on cats and horses…

Harry worked in the studio, but I forgot to get a picture in there. Here he is in studio red fleece at the end of a hard day’s work. We are well aware how lucky we are to be working these days, and how lucky to live in this beautiful place.

Stay well, all.

  1. Oh dear, I hope Weedy is back romping soon. Do you think it was another dog or coyote? The new paperwork to get a vehicle maintained, what a strange world. The night blooming jasmine appears to be ready to go outside. And the chickadee eggs! They must be minuscule. Catching up on the previous days blogs.

  2. Oh dear Weedy, hope you’re ok! And Nettie is so thoughtful! You all look marvelous, with or without headgear. Stay safe and be well.

  3. Hooray for Harry! i love your photos, especially the pileated woodpecker. you have a perfect setting for bird watching.
