Monday – February 17, 2020

The day started with arrangements, canceling some appointments, making others. Jane and I will not be showing in Ohio next month, and it is highly unlikely we will get to Omaha, either, but only Ohio is scratched. Harry had many arrangements that had to be rescheduled, but for some reason, his Primary Care Physician must see him this week, after his hospital stay and brief brush with skilled nursing at Surrey Place. It must have something to do with insurance. So, on Thursday, the wheelchair transport service (Express Medical Transport) will pick us up at 10 AM to get us to an 11:15 doctor’s appointment, followed by bloodwork at the St. Luke’s lab. That is going to be a very tiring day! Not to mention an expensive round trip… Unfortunately, it’s illegal to transport a person in a horse trailer. But at least I get to ride in the van with Harry.

We did PT and OT – walk / hopping all the way to the kitchen sink (PT) and washing hair there (OT). As you can tell, I do not really know what I am doing as a case worker. Tomorrow morning someone will be visiting to check on Harry’s “situation”. Yikes! I will need to hide the dogs and vacuum the dog hair.

Cedar wants to do some therapy, too.

The lovely, soft scarf keeping Harry’s neck warm was knitted by Audrey James, who was one of the most joyful people we have ever met. We did not know her long, but we will never forget her and I hope her spirit is at work knitting Harry’s femur. Her daughters are certainly keeping us well fed!

Jack Abels came out for a visit, and to watch last night’s recorded episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Many laughs (best medicine), until Harry was worn out and Jack drove home – he couldn’t believe how far out we live. Not the first time that has been mentioned! When things go awry, it really feels like we are far away from town, but we do like the peace here. It’s been so nice of people to make the journey to visit.

Harry and Jack and the dreaded Hussar sculpture that did the damage.

Back to bed for the best therapist visit of the day…

Nettie, being a border collie mix, spends much of her time watching Harry. She is not a snuggler, but she keeps watch. I will try to get a picture of her tomorrow. All of the animals have been so good – I think Jane trained them while we were in the hospital!

Jane came and got the dreaded wheelchair from Surrey Place so that she can return it for us tomorrow. They were quite unpleasant about our departure, and the wheelchair was a bit of an issue. I look forward to getting all the loose ends tied up. Jane will make them sign a receipt. What a good friend to venture right into that awful place for us (but also to visit Pat, who is quite content there, in her private room)! And Jane will also procure many items on the shopping list. How did we get so lucky to have such a friend!?

This evening another good friend, Susan, called from New York, and there was more laughter and some commiseration over “skilled nursing facilities”.

Night check ends another wet and dreary day, but not too cold, which is nice. I’m afraid the blog is getting a bit boring, as life settles into the routine of care and healing, but on we go, through the woods…

Not out of the woods yet…

  1. Go Jane Go! Don’t hide the dogs…everybody knows they have healing properties. Do you need research on that? I’m good at research 😊

  2. Anne, I think that’s a fake deep woods picture. Seriously, thanks for being such an artful blogger. You and Harry are lucky to have each other!
