I started daily blog posting when Harry broke his femur in February 2020. Then, the pandemic took hold, and I continued, with little else to do in the evenings. Now, as the pandemic loosens its grip on us (though, sadly, not everywhere in the world), life has become more hectic here. We are engaging in social activities! And so, last night we were out too late for me to write a post.
Rain arrived during the night, and it rained most of the day today. Rather than do something productive, we watched live streaming of the LRK3DE (a ridiculous acronym for Land Rover Kentucky 3 Day Event). Eventing is one of the most challenging horse sports (sort of a horse triathlon), and Kentucky is one of the most difficult competitions in the world. It was announced that it would not happen this year, but a grass roots fund raising effort resuscitated it.
No spectators were allowed, which was not as sad as it might have been, because rain pelted down all day. We enjoyed watching from our dry and comfortable chairs. It was inspiring and nerve wracking. There were many heartbreaking falls, but no major injuries.
Then, for a little icing on the cake, we watched live streaming of the Maryland Hunt Cup, a timber race considered one of the most demanding in the world. There were nine starters, and only one fall, over a massive timber course. The Irish horse Vintage Vinnie romped through the four mile race, leading all the way, by such a wide margin he was finished before the other horses were over the penultimate jump.
Jane and I did some eventing a while back. Not exactly like LRK3DE! But it was a blast at the time. For fun, here is a picture taken of me on Charmed Invader (Lucky) fourteen years ago, made into a magazine cover as a joke. Thanks to Don Granger for the hilarious photo shopping of his picture of us.
Around here, yesterday warmed up and provided some fun.
Harry, while it was still brisk Slow down, Weedy! Weedy airborne
Many blossoms survived the freeze. The dogwoods are still gorgeous. This is definitely the year of the dogwood.
The upper blossoms are a little shocked by the cold Happy blooms The wild dogwoods are thriving
Yesterday, it was great outdoor rolling weather, but today, it was so wet, rolling had to be done in the stall.
And it was very wet…
Flooded driveway
Marmalade was happy when the rain finally stopped.
Harry worked in the studio, of course. Mater is already exuding a calm comfort.
We had a visit from a pileated woodpecker today. They have been around in the woods, we hear their cackles and their drumming, but we haven’t seen one for a while.
Finally, after the rain, a beautiful sky to end the day and promise of a beautiful day tomorrow.
Stay safe, stay well. Peace.
Love the magazine cover!
Haha! Thanks, Diane – I realized that I failed to credit Don Granger for making that fake magazine cover, so I went into the blog and updated by adding an attribution. It’s a hilarious idea, isn’t it?
That was a great magazine cover Anne.
Credit goes to Don Granger for that, Woody. It’s fun, isn’t it?
Forget about Kentucky whatever- all such stunning pics of your surrounds! From the Mag cover thru Mater, Harry, dogwoods and the pileated woodpecker all such stunning pics! Thanks for the residual excitement!
