July Already – July 2

The year is galloping along, and July has arrived with some blessed rain today.

Yesterday morning it was cool enough that the horses were still out in the pasture when I came out of the house.

Oisin wears protective clothing because he has allergies to midges. He looks like a medieval knight’s horse thundering across a jousting field.

July brings tomatoes from the garden, one of summer’s great benefits.

The deer have eaten every single day lily, but so far, our small, raised garden bed is unmolested.

Any day with a turtle view is a good day, and yesterday’s turtle was blazing fast. I was lucky to get a picture.

Speaking of athletes, the squirrel acrobatics are very entertaining.

Yesterday, I found a baby flycatcher ( a phoebe) on the floor of the shed. I took it out to the fence, and called Melissa for advice. In addition to being a world class horse trainer, she has encyclopedic knowledge of the natural world and has raised many birds. She said the mother would come and get the little bird, which was very nearly flying. After a while, I got worried, and decided to put the bird back up into the nest in the shed. As far as I can tell, it survived, since it is gone today, but there is no evidence of feathers or dead bird anywhere.

Other birds…

And amphibians…

The cats are always a worry with baby birds about, but there have been no indications of trouble.

Harry cannot ride until he gets his heart back in rhythm, but he can still turn Stone out in the evening.

Be safe, be well. Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. I have mixed feelings about July Fourth this year, not much to celebrate about the good ole US of A in my perspective, but to witness the beauty of nature, and the beauty of love, and the beauty of friends that are as safe as they can be fills my heart. Thank you Anne, for this.
