Summer weather returned for the Happenstance August Horse Show, but Jane and Derry were ready to compete. Harry and the dogs and I went to cheer them on. With afternoon out of town visitors, and a long scheduled evening birthday party in the Central West End, we could not get north to Pike County.
Last week, Susan rode for the first time since her hip replacement, which was quite a momentous event. She rode Quick, an elderly, narrow horse. It was wonderful to see her back in the saddle, and even better to hear that there was no soreness afterwards. Within a week, she was back on Teah, who is broader, but the hip did not complain. Soon, Susan will be back in the show ring! Teah has stayed fit with Ali, even going north to show in Chicago, bringing home her usual Championship ribbon! Jane and I are just hoping we can stay patched together enough to show with Susan again, she being the youngest of the “old ladies”.
Melissa came to the show this weekend, and showed Teah’s beautiful daughter, Poppy.
Susan and Melissa, of course, are my link to Bart, who has given me many wonderful memories and brings me joy every day, along with his half brother, Oisin, and adoptive brother Stone. Bart is the leader of the happy herd.
And here is a smattering of Saturday horse show friends…
We didn’t have much time to get home and tidy up for our dear friends, all the way from North Carolina (Ernie and Carolyn) and Chicago (Dick and Marilyn) …
Louise had one of her world famous dinner parties, which she does with apparent ease. It was a joint birthday celebration for Heinz and Marilyn, who are exactly the same age. I was on best behavior and did not take pictures. And I will not disclose the big birthday age (but they are older than Harry!). There was much laughter, delicious food and the evening was capped off by a visit from Runcie the boxer puppy, who is almost a year old now, and magnificent.
Back to Happenstance this morning, with a shorter schedule, so Bart got a day off.
Back at home, I came upon this friend.
Summer is winding down, but we are under a heat advisory for a couple of days, just to remind us that it is still August!
Be safe, be well, stay cool! Slava Ukraini! Peace.
How fun to see your blog in my email while settling down with a good book for the evening. I usher a giant Bravo for all you stalwart equestrians braving these scathing temperatures! Jane and Derry superb, and so good to see Stephanie smiling on her mount after losing one of the finest horses I have ever had the privilege of hanging out with, mostly in his pasture. Mr. B will never be forgotten 🙏 Susan, what a recovery! Another huge Bravo!! I shoukd have been there🏇❤️
So many beautiful horses!
That is a WOW photo of Poppy! And a big congrats to Jane and Derry who continue their winning ways.
As always, you have posted pictures of me that are far better than I think I look! Magic camera. Fun seeing you, Harry, Weedy and the irrepressible Eddy.
