Goodbye, Cedar

We are heartbroken to lose a second dog in less than a month. We have known that Cedar had a tumor on her kidney for almost two years, and we have been considering her to be in “hospice care” for a while now. But today was the end. Fragments of a poem in Prayers From The Ark rattle around in my head, taught to me by my friend Ann Miller Roth when I was 16…

Cedar was a good dog, and she really did keep the varmints at bay. She believed she had an important job to do. Probably a German Shepherd mixed with hound, she came from Stray Rescue, a city dog with 7 puppies when they found her on a loading dock shortly after whelping. Our friend, Christine, fostered her after the puppies were weaned, and she came to us in 2012. Now we are sad, but very grateful for Cedar coming into our life, and the time we had with her.

Jane gave me video of yesterday’s horse show rounds, and I pulled a couple of still pictures of Bart and Derry excelling at old lady horse showing. Back to the show ring tomorrow…

Life goes on. We are emotionally brittle, but the joys certainly outweigh the tears.

Be safe, be well, love your animals and your people while you have them. Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  3. Our dear friends, loyal to the end. It’s never long enough. We had Annie for 18 years and I miss her every day. So sorry for the loss of your faithful friend.

  4. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may. Old time is still a-flying. And this same flower that smiles to-day, tomorrow will be dying. Robert Herrick 1591. As shared by Garrison recently.

  5. Cedar, that first photo of her, so soulful, that’s Cedar to me, a soulful stalwart good dog. Gosh, this loss really gets to my heart. I am sorry, but of course the best is, you, Anne and Harry, and Weedy, you had her, lucky you. Also, in that first photo, her ears are so like my little terrier’s ears, but larger, the little tear drop on the end, and the way they flop. Cedar, me thinks you had many a doggie in your genes. I’m glad I knew you, Cedar, Adios for now.

  6. Losing a beloved animal is sad. Losing another so soon after makes it doubly so. I’m so sorry but I am glad your Cedar had such a good life in the best of homes.
