The name of my blog is taken from a few lines in a relatively obscure poem by W.H. Ogilvie, who wrote poems about fox hunting and horses. It was a different world, and we lived in a last vestige of it, chasing after a pack of hounds wherever they took us. The Ogilvie lines are as follows:
“And there with his peers we may leave him, With all the good men and the true, Who have come to the Last of their Gateways, And laughed, and gone galloping through…”
Horses… they have been my passion since I was five years old and was allowed to feed a sugar lump to the horse that delivered milk in Scotland. I am coming back to the blog after a hiatus with pictures from a romp fest today. After snow last week, it was 60 degrees today, and the horses were feeling “the joys of Spring” as winter looms just two weeks ahead. It was fun to see them playing and staying fit. I will try to pick up with more tomorrow. For tonight, dream of horses.
We are all well here. Harry’s Big Bear was unveiled in Boston at the end of November. The Bruins won the game on their 100 year anniversary, commemorated and brought luck, perhaps, by the bear sculpture. We were sorry to miss the festivities, but travel on Thanksgiving weekend was not an option. The sculptor and his dogs celebrated from afar.
Be safe, be well, be grateful. Sweet dreams. Slava Ukraini! Peace.
Such wonderful photos! Great one of Stone airborne with his tail high in the air, Oisin airborne, notice a trend, actually all of them! And of course, Harry and the pups. Glad all is well over there!
Love the pictures of your horses having fun! Pure joy! I’m in Boston and will try to see The Bear. Loved the pictures of him in the news!
These are a joy to see and give peace and pause. Thank you.
Bob, I agree
I’ve always loved to see horses running free and just enjoying being alive. And I love the poem.
Dreaming, whether day or night, of horses, airborne, racing one another, and then pause, we are reminded of their glory. And to think, they share it with us!
Love that poem and learning about the sugar lump way back when.
Love the photos!
Such a happy ‘recess time’ for them clearer-and charming frolic while the sun shines -for us all too, just seeing their beauty & spirit.
So before these next days’ the slide into winter’s starkness, these photos capture their delighted & determined ‘haymaking’’-galloping through’ or not- thank you for these visuals!
What fun photos of your horses having fun. Love seeing them romp and run in delight.
Among your best blogs ever! I thought it might be all horses, until I reached the coda with a big bear, Harry, Eddy & Weedy. I’m more the “cantering through” kind, en route to my own last gateway. Still I dream of horses, and say a prayer for the cowgirl.
Great photos Anne. I could see the mischief in their faces. Would love to see a photo of the Bear.
Anne, it was so interesting to see how your blog name came about—I love those lines—and an anecdote about your “passion”.
And the horses! Oh, my, it seems your photos gave each of us a breathless, spirited ride! Thank you.
Bah humbug! Only Weedy counts!
(Not quite sure where The Bear is.)
