Friday – October 2, 2020

Marilyn arrived early this morning, first at Jane’s house to vaccinate, then here for vaccinations for all, and surgery on Stone’s tail. I had turned the horses out for a romp (and a scratch) before Marilyn arrived, and they all came in and behaved in an exemplary manner.

Marilyn examined Oisin, who has terrible itches. She diagnosed Insect Hypersensitivity. It might be Sweet Itch, but that would entail testing at the University, and treatment is basically the same either way. Treat the symptoms. She dispensed some anti itch spray, I have ordered a fly sheet, and the weather will take care of everything soon, anyway, by killing off the insects. Jane came over in support, and next, Marilyn got to work on Stone, who has a melanoma on his tail. It began to increase in size a few weeks ago, so we planned to wait until temperatures and flies decreased. Today was the day.

Before you see these pictures, remember, his tail hair will grow back. We do not care how it looks, just that it heals.

Soon after Marilyn left, Stone’s sedative wore off, and the horses could return to the pasture. Stone’s tail is bandaged, and with luck, will stay that way. Tomorrow morning I will change the bandage. Marianne arrived to do barn work, and I drove the Kawasaki Mule over to Marilyn’s house to drop off her twitch, which she forgot. It was a beautiful morning for an open air drive.

Connie came to fix the water feature, which was desperate for her attention. The water gets stagnant without the pump running the stream. She worked her usual magic, and we (and the fish and frogs) are much happier.

The birds were hungry today, with the cooler weather. Cardinals were abundant.

Finally, Harry gives a treat to Stone this evening for being such a good, brave horse.

Stay safe, stay well, be brave, and wear a mask!

  1. Never a dull moment with critters. Hope Stone heals with no complications. Enjoy the fall season. Peace
