Eighty and Onward – June 13

Again, the slow rural internet has blocked my blogging until this evening, so this will be a rather long catch up post. The biggest news is that on Saturday, somebody here turned eighty!

We had an early celebration Thursday with John and Laura, John having blazed the trail to eighty just ahead of Harry, earlier this year.

On Thursday’s perfect, cool morning, we had a delightful ride.

On Friday, we had a visit from friends Susan and John, with their grandson Ford, from California. Weedy loves meeting new friends.

Then, Jane and I went to Three Creek Farm to help our friend Laura. Laura had a freak fall from a chair on which she had been standing. Well, actually, she was stepping off the chair and inadvertently onto a suitcase from which she fell. But she is hurt, and compromised, so I volunteered to load her pony Connor into a trailer to prepare him for moving on. Laura has sold him and he will be making his way to California. This was just a practice session, and all went well. There are many decades of my life connected to Three Creek, and memories tumble over me traveling up the long gravel driveway. It was a wonderful visit. Thrus, from South Carolina, arrived as a bonus. We last saw him just before the pandemic in New York, where it was bitterly cold and snowing.

Saturday, we had a quiet day together to celebrate the milestone birthday. Jane came over to watch the Belmont and for birthday cake. It was a memorable day for its peaceful simplicity. We were not lucky in betting on Rich Strike, but we did have fun.

The pleasant weather has taken leave of these parts, and we now find ourselves in “dangerous heat conditions”. It’s hot and humid and record breaking. But life goes on.

Birds still greet the mornings with much song, but the afternoons are pretty quiet in the heat.

This morning, I picked up Heather Romriell and returned to Three Creek to transport Connor to Heather’s barn. She will work with him for a while before he goes west to California.

After that adventure, Rebecca came to help with the garden. It was hot, but a pleasant day.

Harry got a haircut!

Be safe, be well, stay cool. Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. Sorry for Rich Strike. He seemed not to have the same steam as he had in the Derby.
Happy birthday to Harry. 80 is indeed a milestone.

    1. Yes, Janis – it looked like Rich Strike sort of wore himself out before the race, unlike the Kentucky Derby, where he was unconcerned and relaxed. The curse of expectations got him, I guess!

  2. Congratulations and best wishes to Harry! A lovely collection of people and animals, and flowers.

    1. Thanks, Carolyn – your pictures of the groundhog family are hilarious. And the deer with his velvet antlers is my favorite picture of the year so far!

  3. Always enjoy these blogs with your beautiful photos, Anne! Happy, happy birthday to Harry!
    Love,
    Dan

    1. Thanks so much, Dan! We both send love. I think of you often, especially in the presence of black capped chickadees.

  4. Lovely as usual!! First, is Laura married to John a movie star? Second, Happy Birthday Harry!! Third, the singing tanager in black and white is a fabulous photo. Finally, the smiles at Three Creek Farm the best!! What about Laura’s little Jack? By the way, Harry, I’m guessing when we’re 70 we think, oh man, I could live to 85. Then, on down the road of life, as we near 80 we think, man oh man, I could make it to 85. Now I’m guessing you’re looking at 90 as reasonable. I plan to do the same! maybe even 100!!

    1. Laura is a model, Jane. Like you, one of our glamorous friends. And also an artist.
Laura Balding’s Jack Russell, Dreidl, was in the kennel when we made our first visit. She was running around yesterday, but I failed to get a picture. She has the same mother as Thrus’ little Tigger (a different litter, different sire).
I hope you and Harry make it to a healthy 100! I will take pictures!
