August In The Studio

The Vietnam memorial sculpture is completed, signed, and has left the studio to go to molds and casting. And now the General is taking shape.

Twenty years ago, Harry did a sculpture of Hannah Cole, a remarkable pioneer woman who settled Boonville, Missouri, along the Missouri River west of Columbia, after her husband was killed by Indians. Harry’s ratio of women to men indicates that women get short shrift in bronze. This woman was given deserved recognition for grit and ambition. She even established a ferry across the river. We went to Boonville earlier this month for a twenty year celebration of the sculpture, and Harry gave a speech about Hannah’s perseverance. It was great fun, with the Hannah Cole sculpture a regular stop on our Katy Trail bike trips. The statue is one of my favorite Weber installations, and the concurrent 90th Cole Family Reunion that day included an interesting cast of characters.

We have a resident in the bird house outside the studio. I used my camera from a distance to take a picture in order to see what kind of bird was in residence. I discovered an amphibian instead – still, that is a sign of a healthy ecosystem and it is welcome!

The pleasant weather departed today, and August heat moved back in, but we certainly enjoyed the several cool days!

Be safe, be well, take naps, count your blessings! Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. I LOVED this post, I love all your posts, but this was great. What a blessing your and Harry’s friendship is to us!! ❤️

  2. I agree it’s a blessing to know you, Anne, and Harry. For those of us that spent a lot of time alone, your enduring and loving relationship serves as inspiration. And, it worked, lucky me! You won’t be surprised at my adoration of the Harry and Weedy photo. Look at that good boy, eyes right at the camera! The tour of the studio and Harry’s continuing work astounds me, wondrous, gorgeous, and moving! I too, Anne, love the Hannah Cole sculpture and story! Thank you!!

  3. I’m so in awe of Harry’s workmanship. The sculptures are amazing and I consider myself blessed to have met you both. All is good in MA; we have a lull after 2 months of pretty constant entertaining. Stay well xoxoxo
