April Visitors

April will soon give way to May. During this month of farewells, we have also had a steady stream of visitors here, grounding us in the present, while there have been memories of the past pulling at us.

Welcome avian visitors have been returning from the south, while others, notably juncoes, have moved north for the summer. Amphibians and reptiles are out and about. Some of the visitors (whitetail deer) are here year round, but are still appreciated for their beauty. At the same time, those beautiful deer are despised for eating hostas and daylilys. Not to mention apples and other fruits. Life is full of contradictions. I am learning more about deer proof plants.

Regina and Greg trekked out here for a visit and delighted us. Regina is the niece of one of our dearest friends, Pat, who died in 2020. Greg is her partner, who unfortunately never met Pat. There was much reminiscing, and the day passed too quickly. Greg is a therapist and an adventurer. He has bicycled through 40 countries! Both of them are fascinating, multi talented people, and, of course, animal lovers. Regina became a veterinary technician after working in theater. They are both quite exceptional, and we enjoyed their visit immensely.

The full time residents here are all well.

Spring is reaching peak flourish thanks to recent plentiful rains. The world has become green and lush, with flowers rioting like college students.

Eddy is crazed by squirrels, running from window to window to watch them, and by the end of the day he is exhausted.

Weedy was exhausted yesterday by a misadventure. He returned to his old dumpster diving habits and got stuck in the dumpster. Harry went in search, when he saw the tracker was stationary for a while. It took my muscles to extricate Weedy from his predicament once Harry located him, but all was well, even if Weedy was somewhat chagrined.

Speaking of muscles, Nathan helped with various projects yesterday. We took the Mule to the woods, and Eddy saw several deer, which ran ahead of us, giving Nathan quite a workout, holding onto the crazed lurcher. It was too wet to mow, so Nathan took down a dead tree that was threatening to fall across the driveway. He is a man of many talents, and as nice as he is competent. We are very fortunate to have Nathan’s help in our old age!

And so it goes around here…

Be well, be safe from storms, and open to adventures. Slava Ukraini! Peace.

  1. Your dumpster ramp is magnificent! It’s a work of art. Only I would notice that among all your beautiful photos. The new stump needs a bronze- perhaps a turtle?

  2. Poor Weedy. His look says “Get me out please!” You have so many nice plants and wild creatures. I have been thinking about you with such devastating storms in the Midwest and hoping you are not affected.

  3. I love reading all of your posts ! Your pictures are spectacular! We have a pair of nesting cardinals off our porch and I have been inspired to photograph them , I sat out there 4 hours waiting for a good shot ! You make it look easy !

  4. I am also admiring your dumpster ramp and decorative flair! Fringe tree is amazing. I am officially inviting myself to view your beautiful garden and maybe pet the horses!

Love your visitors and love spring best of all. Thanks for sharing. I arrived home to tulips, daffodils, and creeping phlox, stalwart color-bearers for the awakening north, and lovely echos of my Missouri visit.
