All Day Snow – February 3

It is not easy here with snow. The beauty of it gets overlooked in the hassle, and this was probably the most snow we have had since living here. To keep the dumpster from filling with snow, and to keep the ramp clear, I covered everything with tarps. There has been no opportunity yet to remove the tarps, so I have shoveled a path into the woods for cleaning stalls. At last, this evening the snow has stopped. Tomorrow the tarps come off and the tractor comes out for road clearing.

I have just discovered some technical issues, some of the pictures I had planned to post are missing, so I will make this brief and deal with the problem tomorrow or Saturday. I expect tomorrow to be pretty tiring and cold.

Today, the dogs went out often, but briefly, and came in with plenty of snow every time. The house is a mess, but we have kept power and are counting our blessings. Friends’ barn burned this morning in Nebraska, killing one person and nine horses, eight horses saved, according to news reports. We are stunned and heartbroken and have nothing to complain about.

Tuesday evening, Harry had an audition for the lead in a play called The Giver. We drove through a miserable, steady rain in the dark. I waited in the car with Weedy. Harry said it went well, but he wasn’t sure he would get the part. When we got home, he tripped over a dog bed and hit his butt on the corner of our bed, sustaining a large hematoma. But worse, he dislocated his bottom rib. It seems more painful than the broken femur, as an observer, but then, he isn’t getting morphine. Poor Harry is quite incapacitated! And to make matters worse, the director called today to offer him the lead, and he had to refuse it, because he will not be able to start rehearsals next week, due to the injury. The littlest thing can change life in an instant. We must try to be mindful (I say to myself).

Harry is well tended by the dogs and Roscoe. I had to cook for him yesterday, but he is much better today and able to fix meals.

Cedar went to the veterinary specialist on Monday, and had an ultrasound. She has an enlarged right adrenal gland, but is not showing many clinical signs of Cushing’s. The bloodwork was inconclusive in that one test said she was a Cushing’s dog, and the other said she was not. So, we are in watch and wait mode, and focused on quality of life. She is an older dog, and we will not do surgery on her. At this point, she is sleeping more, but seems happy, so we are grateful for each good day.

The birds ate voraciously today.

Be safe, be well, say some prayers, and be grateful. Peace.

  1. So sorry about Harry’s accident and that is so awful about your friend’s horses. How devastating.

  2. I see, you cooked for Harry one day, and he got mirculously better the next day, so he could cook? A very good chuckle!! Oh , I am so sorry to hear Harry fell like that, and right before he could have been in the play! Well, there he is, smiling! And, with Dr Weedy, his best doctor ever! The snow is gorgeous, but not with horses I’m afraid, unless your riding in the quiet woods. Our hearts are bleeding for the Cudmore’s, the fire and their heavy losses. So, as you say, we count our blessings, and carry on. Peace and love.

  3. Good to hear that Harry will be okay. (I had a couple of hematomas that way, it was no fun at all). That is horrifying about your Nebraska friends- unimaginable really, did they say the cause? Counting our blessings is the best thing always it seems.
