Horses – November 4

Horses have been my passion since before I can remember, if my mother is to be believed. She related that my first word was “hoss”. Before we moved to this country, when we lived in Kent, our milk was delivered by horse drawn wagon. The horses, Silver and Dolly, lived in a nearby field and I loved to feed a piece of bread to the hard working animals.

Well, now my fondest dreams have been realized, and I have had a life with horses. I am the one doing the hard work. Harry and I often say that if aliens came down from outer space and observed us for a day or two, they would assume we humans were servants of the other creatures – dogs, cats and horses.

They are a great deal of work… but at least they are very expensive, too!

All of the animals bring us immense joy, but horses in particular are magical. They outweigh us by more than ten times. We are as small in relation to our horses as Roscoe, the cat is in relation to us! Yet they allow us to boss them around and ride them, and they entertain us with their antics. We are astonished daily by how lucky we are to live with these creatures.

Harry has two passions, of course – the animals and the artwork. He is able to enjoy the horses from the window, and the dogs and cats are paws on helping him recover. Soon he will be back in the studio, where Jackie Joyner Kersee awaits him…

And that is all from here after another day on the road to recovery…

Be safe, be well, get better! Be grateful for small improvements. They add up. Slava Ukraini! Peace…

your gallops are a delight, Anne. I have to come see your slice of paradise and sketch your horses. What you say about living with animals reminds me of this wonderful book I have been reading: “the good good pig” by Sy Montgomery. It sounds like you would relate on how animals can teach us many things… how to live. My best to Harry. We were talking about coming for a visit at the drawing group tonight. When he feels up to it!!!

It’s been a bit, I had to go back and catch up. I am keeping Harry in my thoughts for a good recovery. I just saw a interview video that I shared with a few friends the other day – the trainer was talking about how in our day to day life with horses (because the work can be overwhelming at times) we forget what an absolute privilege it is to work with them in so many ways but just the fact they allow us to train and ride them.

    Thinking of you both, Jana

I longed for a horse when I was a little girl and didn’t understand why we couldn’t keep one in the tiny space behind our ground floor flat. Life led me in other directions but I have always adored those beautiful creatures and am so grateful for your posts. Best wishes to you and Harry…and everyone.

Anne, what a lovely reflection on memories and pleasures and hope. Beautiful words along with beautiful pictures of God’s creations and man’s creations. It was a wonderful bedtime story for me. Thank you!😊

Most importantly, I m so glad Harry is doing so much better!! I’m glad he is doing a Jackie Joiner Kersee project. She looks good already. She came to William Woods University a long time ago to give a talk. She was very inspiring. Yes, horses are amazing animals. Chris McCarron who won the KY Derby on Alysheba and I got to ride in the Parade of Breeds at the KY Horse Park. He, of course, was on a Thoroughbred, and I was on a five-gaited Saddlebred. We rode side by side from the barn to the ring. He remarked that the horse is such an amazing animal because of all the different things different horses can do. His horse could run really fast while mine could rack with really high action.
